Covered — rebuilding after the cut. A 1.8% yield at a 35.2% adjusted payout is covered now: $0.78 a quarter costs about 35 cents of every adjusted earnings dollar, and trailing reported free cash flow covers the dividend about 1.7×. The flag is the record, not the math today — 3M cut the dividend from $1.51 to $0.70 at the April 2024 Solventum spin-off, and two small raises since ($0.73 in 2025, $0.78 in 2026) have rebuilt it only to about half its pre-spin rate, while PFAS and earplug settlement payments still claim cash ahead of future raises.
Key risk: The litigation settlement schedule — PFAS public-water settlement payments run from 2024 through 2036 ($10.5–$12.5 billion in total) and Combat Arms earplug contributions run through 2029 (up to $6.0 billion) — that cash comes ahead of future dividend raises.
Changes if: Reported free cash flow falls below the dividend as settlement payments peak, or the raise rebuild stalls. At a 35.2% adjusted payout, a bad quarter alone would not do it.
- ✓Payout-coverage check: 35.2% of trailing adjusted earnings ($3.12 indicated vs. $8.87 adjusted EPS; 46.6% of reported EPS) — and trailing reported free cash flow of about $2.68B covers about $1.60B of dividends paid ~1.7×.
- !Yield check: 1.8% indicated ($3.12/yr at the $173.46 close on Oct 23, 2026) is real, earned income, but modest for a single stock — below the 2.0% line, and the share-price run has compressed it.
- !Dividend growth check: Cut from $1.51/qtr in Q1 2024 to $0.70 at the Solventum spin-off, then $0.73 in 2025 and $0.78 in 2026 — two raises rebuilding, but the pre-spin 60+ year streak does not carry over and the rate is still about half the old one.
What this grade doesn't say: It screens the dividend only — covered, real, compounding. It says nothing about valuation or price: a well-covered payer can still be overpriced, and its price can still fall.
