House verdict

Covered on adjusted earnings, stretched on reported ones. A 3.21% yield on a $1.60 quarterly dividend, raised 8.8% in September 2026 for a 17th consecutive year, is real cash — but $6.40 annualized is about 77% of the $8.29–$8.44 adjusted diluted EPS guidance for 2026, and about 93% on a trailing reported basis, where non-cash fair-value adjustments cut Q3 reported EPS to $2.12 against $2.36 adjusted. Covered, with a thin cushion.

Key risk: Pricing carries the dividend — cigarette volumes were flat in Q3 2026 while price drove the gain, and smoke-free products are still just over 40% of net revenues. If pricing meets resistance or the smoke-free transition stalls, a payout already near 77% of adjusted earnings has little cushion.

Changes if: The annualized dividend pushes past about 85% of adjusted diluted EPS, or adjusted EPS growth stalls while reported charges stop being non-cash one-offs. Either would turn a stretched payout into an uncovered one.

What this grade doesn't say: It screens the dividend only — covered, real, compounding. It says nothing about valuation or price: a well-covered payer can still be overpriced, and its price can still fall.

Room: Consumer Reliability. Not one of the House's current holdings — in Order a New House it takes a seat in this room and carries the room's 19% target. Target 19% — the House's biggest room. Broad, quality-screened dividend payers: the reliable base the income is built on.
