New to investing? How to open a brokerage account

A scorecard only helps once you have somewhere to actually buy. If you don't have a brokerage account yet, Robinhood is the app the House itself runs on — it's free to open, has no account minimum, and lets you buy fractional shares, so a first deposit can be small. Opening one takes about ten minutes:

  1. 1

Start from the link below and create a login. An email address and a password are all the first step asks for.

  2. 2

Complete the application.Name, date of birth, address, and Social Security number. Every U.S. brokerage is required by federal law to verify your identity — this part is normal, not a red flag.

  3. 3

Link a bank account and make a first deposit. There's no minimum. Start with an amount you can afford to leave invested — money you might need next month doesn't belong in the market.

  4. 4

Place your first order.Search any ticker from the scorecards. Fractional shares mean you can start with a few dollars of a stock instead of a full share's price.

Referral disclosure: That button is a referral link. If you open and fund an account through it, Robinhood may pay us a referral reward — it costs you nothing extra and doesn't change your account's terms. It also buys no influence here: no scorecard, verdict, or number on this site is affected by it, and Robinhood doesn't review or endorse this site's content. Any sign-up reward and its conditions are Robinhood's offer, set by Robinhood's terms, and can change or end at any time.

How this site earns money. If you use the links on this site to sign up or buy something, we may earn a commission or a referral reward — it costs you nothing extra. This site sells its own product (the Weekly House Score, through Payhip) and contains affiliate and referral links, including the Robinhood referral link on this page. The site also displays advertising served by Google AdSense, and earns money when ads are shown or clicked. Compensation never changes a score, a verdict, or a number on this site, and no company or fund pays to be covered or to be graded well.
