House verdict

A 12.9% BDC yield with a quarter of the payout as return of capital — and a price down 17% in a year. BIZD paid $1.56 per share over the trailing 12 months, a 12.90% trailing yield at the $12.09 close on October 27, 2026, from 35 BDC holdings led by Ares Capital (14.24%) and Main Street Capital (5.37%). VanEck's September 30, 2026 19a notice estimates 27.15% of fiscal-year distributions as return of capital, and the 1-year price return is −17.14% even though 5- and 10-year NAV total returns (+5.11% and +7.18% per year) are positive. Aggregate NII coverage of the underlying BDCs is not disclosed at ETF level, so the §5 coverage test cannot be passed on verified evidence.

Key risk: The fund owns leveraged private-credit lenders, so a credit wobble cuts the BDCs' NII, their dividends, and BIZD's price at the same time, while over a quarter of the current payout is estimated return of capital.

Changes if: The 19a return-of-capital share stays above 25% for a full year, 1-year total return stays negative while distributions continue, or aggregate underlying NII coverage is verified below 100%.

What this grade doesn't say: It screens the dividend only — covered, real, compounding. It says nothing about valuation or price: a well-covered payer can still be overpriced, and its price can still fall.

BIZD in the House

Room: Credit / BDC. Not one of the House's current holdings — the room is its place in the library, not a position in the House. Target 9% — business-lending income. Higher yield for carrying the credit risk banks used to keep.
